Promoting sustainable mobility: EU funding for Medvode-Pirniče-Vikrče cycling connection
Ljubljana, 21 May 2021 – Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy has approved funding for the project Agreement on the development of region: Medvode-Pirniče-Vikrče cycling connection. The project worth EUR 2.2 million will be implemented by the Municipality of Medvode under the Agreement on the development of the Osrednjeslovenska region and will receive EUR 912 thousand of European Regional Development Fund support.
As part of the project, municipality Medvode will construct a safe and well-arranged cycling connection between the settlements Verje, Zgornje Pirniče, Spodnje Pirniče and Vikrče and the urban centre of Medvode. The two-way asphalt cycling route in the length of 6,215 metres and width 3.5 metres will also enable agricultural machinery to access land for farming purposes as a part of the cycling route is planned to go through fields. A smaller section of the cycling route in the length of 450 metres will be built along the existing traffic route and will also be used by motorised vehicles. The project will also result in the construction of a footbridge over the Sava river in Medvode between the library and municipal building. The footbridge will be 138 metres long.
The cycling routes and the numerous access points to the centre of Medvode will attract numerous municipal residents and cyclists thus reducing the burden of the centre of Medvode with motor traffic.
The project promotes sustainable mobility and a healthy lifestyle and enhances the safety of cyclists.
