Getting around faster on a bike
A bike sharing network has recently been launched in the Gorenjska region in the framework of the project Getting around faster on a bike. The network includes five municipalities and takes the already existing bike-rental schemes in Kranj (KRsKOLESOM), Jesenice (JesNICE Bikes) and Bled (Bled Green ways) to the next level. The newest addition is set to foster sustainable mobility, encourage modal shift and, as a result, more sustainable travel patterns with citizens increasingly use of walking and cycling, i.e. low-carbon modes of transport and public transport.
Offering a total of 245 bikes, of which at least 60% are e-bikes, the system Gorenjska.bike now includes 28 stations in the wider area of Kranj, six in Jesenice, five in Radovljica, three in Tržič and one in Naklo. Local residents can log into the system online at www.gorenjska.bike or by using smartphone application Mobiln.si. Regular or e-bikes are available to rent for a period of one or several months.
The project has become a cornerstone effort of local authorities to set up a number of bike-rental locations that will facilitate the launch of a bike-sharing network covering the entire region.
The project has received co-financing under the community-led local development (CLLD) funding made available under a call for proposals launched by the Local Action Group Gorenjska košarica and complements the activities aiming at setting up a comprehensive cycling network which includes all 18 municipalities of the Gorenjska region and adjacent municipalities of Komenda, Kamnik, Vodice, Medvode, Logatec and Cerkno. The Local Action Group has made a concerted effort to support the development of utility and recreational cycling and cycle tourism in the abovementioned 24 municipalities. The area is now criss-crossed with national cycling connections and important local connections. A unified tourist map and a network marking system are currently being developed. This regional model is the first of its kind in Slovenia and the Local Action Group sees the model as best practice inspiring local authorities in other regions of the country to come together and set up further regional cycling networks.
